School of the Bible - Online Study - "What Does the Bible say About the Power of Words"

Presented by: Pastor Gloria Kennedy

WORDS OF LIFE NOT OF DEATH

Proverbs 16:24  (NKJV)

24 Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.

Proverbs 16:24  (VOICE)

24 Pleasant words are like a honeycomb:    they drip sweet food for life and bring health to the body.

Proverbs 16:24  (MSG)

24 Gracious speech is like clover honey - good taste to the soul, quick energy for the body.

Proverbs 16:24 -AMPC

24 Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the mind and healing to the body.

Consider these statements regarding YOUR words.  Healing to the body, profound statement and it is what the Bible says about the words we speak out of our mouths

.Job 6:24-26  (NKJV)

24 “Teach me, and I will hold my tongue;Cause me to understand wherein I have erred. 25 How forceful are right words! But what does your arguing prove? 26 Do you intend to rebuke my words,And the speeches of a desperate one, which are as wind?

We can ask for help regarding how to speak

.Job 12:10-12  NKJV)

10 In whose hand is the life of every living thing,And the breath of all mankind? 11 Does not the ear test wordsAnd the mouth taste its food? 12 Wisdom is with aged men,And with length of days, understanding.

Wisdom can be achieved by studying the Word of God.  The life of every living thing is in the Hand of God.

Psalm 12:5-7  (NKJV)

“For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy,Now I will arise,” says the Lord; “I will set him in the safety for which he yearns.”  The words of the Lord are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.  You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.

God’s Words do not change, period!

Psalm 19:13-14 (NKJV)

13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;Let them not have dominion over me.Then I shall be blameless,And I shall be innocent of great transgression.14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heartBe acceptable in Your sight,O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.

The scriptures ask that the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts please God. Think about that.  Whose acceptance are we seeking?

Psalm 52:3-5  (NKJV)

You love evil more than good,Lying rather than speaking righteousness. Selah You love all devouring words,You deceitful tongue. God shall likewise destroy you forever; He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and uproot you from the land of the living. Selah

Do we ever consider that our words are deceitful or that we are lying?

Psalm 55:20-22  (NKJV)

20 He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; He has broken his covenant. 21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, But war was in his heart;
His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. 22 Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

Your words are smoother than butter, but what is in your heart?

Psalm 109:2-4  (NKJV)

For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful Have opened against me; they have spoken against me with a lying tongue. They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause. In return for my love they are my accusers, but I give myself to prayer

Why do we try to avenge ourselves?  Clearly we should give ourselves over to prayer and pray for our enemies.

Psalm 119:56-58  (NKJV)

56 This has become mine, because I kept Your precepts  57 You are my portion, O Lord; I have said that I would keep Your words. 58 I entreated Your favor with my whole heart; Be merciful to me according to Your word.

God always does His part, we must be sure that we do our part.

Psalm 119:102-104  (NKJV)

102 I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself have taught me.  103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!  104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.

Proverbs 4:3-5  (NKJV)

When I was my father’s son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, He also taught me, and said to me: “Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.

We must read the Bible to get the Words in our hearts, mind and spirit. The more we read, the more we will retain.  We can even listen to the Bible on our electronic devices and learn and grow.

Proverbs 8:7-9  (NKJV)

For my mouth will speak truth;Wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; nothing crooked or perverse is in them. They are all plain to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge.

We are responsible for speaking truth.

Proverbs 10:18-20  (NKJV)

18 Whoever hides hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool. 19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise. 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the heart of the wicked is worth little.

There are times when we just need to hush!

Proverbs 15:25-27  (NKJV)

25 The Lord will destroy the house of the proud,
But He will establish the boundary of the widow.26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,But the words of the pure are pleasant.27 He who is greedy for gain troubles his own house,But he who hates bribes will live.

Are our words pleasant?

Proverbs 18:7-9 NKJV

A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles,  and they go down into the inmost body. He who is slothful in his work is a brother to him who is a great destroyer.

Are we talebearers?

Proverbs 17:27  (NKJV)

27He who has knowledge spares his words, And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.

Proverbs 18:4  (NKJV)

4The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook.

Proverbs 18:8  (NKJV)

8The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body.

Why do we like gossip?

Proverbs 19:7  (NKJV)

7All the brothers of the poor hate him; How much more do his friends go far from him! He may pursue them with words, yet they abandon him.

Are you a flatterer?

Proverbs19:27  (NKJV)

27Cease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

Have you found that your parents were right a lot of the time?

Proverbs 22:12  (NKJV)

12The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, But He overthrows the words of the faithless.

Ecclesiastes 5:1-3  (NKJV)

1Fear God, Keep Your Vows  Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil. Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; therefore let your words be few.For a dream comes through much activity, and a fool’s voice is known by his many words.

Do you know anyone who is always talking to impress?  Are you someone who does that?  Mankind likes to talk but there are times that we all need to be quiet and simply listen.  Selah!

Ecclesiastes 5:6-8  (NKJV)

Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse[a] and destroy the work of your hands? For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.

The Vanity of Gain and Honor

If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them.

Ecclesiastes 9:15-17  (NKJV)

15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that same poor man. 16 Then I said: “Wisdom is better than strength.  Nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.  17 Words of the wise, spoken quietly, should be heard rather than the shout of a ruler of fools.  The scripture clearly tells us that the poor man’s wisdom is despised.  It is usually best to pray and allow God to handle the situation than to try to prove how much you know.

Ecclesiastes 10:11-15  (NKJV)

11 A serpent may bite when it is not charmed; the babbler is no different.  12 The words of a wise man’s mouth are racious, but the lips of a fool shall swallow him up;  13 The words of his mouth begin with foolishness, and the end of his talk is raving madness.

Are your words gracious or foolish?

14 A fool also multiplies words.  No man knows what is to be; who can tell him what will be after him?  15 The labor of fools wearies them, for they do not even know how to go to the city!

Do not listen to the words of a foolish person.

Ecclesiastes 12:10-12  (NKJV)

10 The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright—words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars[a] are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd. 12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.

Speak words of truth.

Ephesians 5:5-7  (NKJV)

For this you know,[a] that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them.

Do not be fooled because a person has a great gift for speaking, be sure the words are not empty.

Romans 3:3-5  (NKJV)

For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written:  “That You may be justified in Your words, and may overcome when You are judged.”[a]But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.)

Our words should line up with God’s Words.

James 3:3-12  (NKJV) - The Untamable Tongue

3 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed,[a] we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

We must continually submit our words to examination of the Holy Spirit.

This passage of scriptures says we use our mouths to bless God and curse men who were also made in the image of God just like us.  It should not be so. Words that come out of your mouth can be words of life or words of death and only you can decide.
