I.  THE TWELVE TRIBES

EAST SIDE

A.  TRIBE OF JUDAH AKA JUDA Pronounced—Ju-dahJudah—means—Object Of Praise—Praise Of The LordFirst in marching order—Num. 10:14Jacobs Fourth Son by Leah Gen. 29:35Judah was a natural leader—out spoken and decisive.Thought clearly and took action in high-pressure situations.Number of Men 74,600-- age of 20 and above Num.1: 27

 

B.  TRIBE OF ISSACHAR  Pronounced—Is sa karIssachar—means—There is Here Or “Reward.”Second in marching order—Num. 10:15Jacobs fifth Son by Leah Gen. 30:18Number of Men 54,400-- age of 20 and above Num. 1:29

 

C.  TRIBE OF ZEBULUN   Pronounced—Zeb u lon, or Zab u lunZebulun—means—Dwelling or Wished For HabitationThird In Marching Order—Num. 10:16Jacobs sixth Son of Leah Gen. 30:20Leah named him Zebulun meaning, “Abode, Dwelling.”His tribe became a Maritime people.They prospered greatly trading with Canaanite cities.Number of Men 57,400-- age of 20 and above (Num. 1:31)

 

The Total of the numbered men of the camp of Judah was 186,400, by their armies.  They shall set out first (Num. 2:1-9)

 

Tribe of LevitesNumbers 10:17   (KJ)17. And the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle 

SOUTH SIDE

D.  TRIBE OF REUBEN  Pronounced—reoo benReuben—means—Behold A Son Or A Vision Of The SonFourth In Marching Order—(Num. 10:18)Jacobs first Son of Leah; Gen. 35:23Number of Men 46,500; age of 20 and above; Num. 1:21Jacob described his son as being “unstable as water” Gen. 49:4Reuben saved Joseph life by talking his brothers out of murder.Gen. 49: 3-4

 

E.  TRIBE OF SIMEON   Pronounced—Sim e onSimeon—means—Obedient HearingFifth In Marching Order—(Num. 10:19)Jacobs second Son of Leah Gen. 29:33; Gen. 49:5 He is remembered most for his vengeance on the men of Shechem, because of the rape of his sister Dinah.He settled his family in Egypt with Jacob and his brothers.Number of Men 59,300--age of 20 and above (Num. 1:23) 

 

F.  TRIBE OF GAD   Pronounced—GadGad—means—Good FortuneSixth In Marching Order—(Num. 10:20)Jacobs seventh son, first born of Zilpah, secon wife. Leah maid Gen. 29:33; Gen. 35:26 Number of Men 45,650 age of 20 and above (Num. 1:25)The tribe of Gad would constantly be troubled by foreign invaders, but would successfully withstand them and put then to flight. (Genesis 49:14)The Total number of men in the camp of Reuben was 151,450, by their armies. They shall be set out second (Num. 2:10-16)

 

Tribe of Levites

Numbers 10:21   (KJ)

21. And the Kohathites set forward, bearing the sanctuary: and the other did set up the tabernacle against they came.  was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the tabernacle

Numbers 10:21  (NAS)

21. Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects; and the tabernacle was set up before their arrival.

 

WEST SIDE 

G.  TRIBE OF EPHRAIM  Gen. 41:52; Num. 1:10 Pronounced—E phra imEphraim—means—“The Multitude Of Nations” or “The fullness of Gentiles “Doubly FruitfulSeventh In Marching Order—(Num. 10:22)After Jacob exacted an oath from Joseph to bury him in Canaan he adopted his grandson Ephraim and Manasseh, gave them the position and legal rights equal to Jacobs’s eldest sons Reuben and Simeon (Gen. 48:5)Number of Men 40,500-- age of 20 and above (Num. 1:33)

 

H.  TRIBE OF MANASSEH   Pronounced—Ma nas sheManasseh—means—Causing Forgetfulness Gen. 41:51Eight In Marching Order—Num. 10:23First born son of Joseph and his Egyptian wife Gen. 41:50-51Gen. 48:5-20 explains why Ephraim and Manasseh, in that order, provided their names for two of the twelve tribes of Israel, but Joseph did not. Number of Men 32,200 age of 20 and above

 

I.  TRIBE OF BENJAMIN  Pronounced—Ben ja minBenjamin—means—Son Of The Right HandNinth In Marching Order—(Num. 10:24)Jacob’s youngest of twelve sons and full brother to Joseph.Jacob named him Benjamin which means, “Son of my right hand,” after his dying mother Rachel had called him Ben—oni meaning, “Son of my sorrow.” Gen. 35:18Jacob spoke of Benjamin’s skill as a warrior and prophesied of the military fame of his descendants by saying, “Benjamin is a ravenous wolf.” Gen. 49:27Number of Men 35,400 age of 20 and above (Num. 1:37)

 

NORTH SIDE

J.  TRIBE OF DAN    Ex. 31:6  Pronounced—DanDan—means—He That Judges Gen. 30:6Tenth In Marching Order—(Num. 10:25)The Fifth son of Jacob, and the first of Bilhah, Rachel’s hand maid youngest of twelve sons and full brother to JosephNumber of Men 62,700 age of 20 and above (Num.1: 39)

 

As the camp moved, Judah led the way with “praise.” The rear was brought up by Dan,, whose name means “judgment,” meaning that anyone who attacked Israel would be judged by God. At the center were the Levites, whose name means “joined,” or “communion.”

 

K.  TRIBE OF ASHER  Pronounced—Ash ur (NT Form Aser Luke 2:36; Rev. 7:6Asher—means—Happy Gen. 30:13; 49:20Eleventh In Marching Order—(Num. 10:26)The eight son of Jacob and second of Zilpah, Leah’s maid and progenitor Deut. 33:24,25son born from Leah maid ZilpahNumber of Men 41,500 age of 20 and above (Num. 1:41)

 

L.  TRIBE OF NAPHTALI  Pronounced—Naph ta li, Neph tha limNaphtali —means—Obtained by wrestlingTwelfth In Marching Order—(Num. 10:27)Number of Men 53,400 age of 20 and above (Num. 1:43)

 

The Total of the numbered men of the camp of Dan 157,600, by their armies. They shall be set out last (Num. 2:25-31)

The Reason and why God prescribe a certain order of moving the different camps

 

Numbers 10:27

27. Thus were the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their armies, when they set forward.

 

II.  JACOBS CHILDREN BIRTH SEQUENCE

1.  Reuben  Pronounced-- Reu ben

Genesis 29: 32         Mother is Leah

32. And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction, now there fore my husband will love me. Ex. 3:7

2.  Simeon  Pronounced Sim e-on

Genesis 29: 33         Mother is Leah

33. And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the Lord hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.

3.  Levi  Pronounced Le vi

Genesis 29: 34         Mother is Leah

34. And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born hin three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.

4.  Judah  Pronounced Ju dah

Genesis 29: 35         Mother is Leah

35. And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she call his name Judah; and left bearing.  

5.  Dan  Pronounced Dan

Genesis 30: 4-6        Mother is Bilhah

4. And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
5. And Bilhah conceived. and bare Jacob a son.
6. And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan. (Means that is judging)

6.  Naphtali  Pronounced Naph ta-li

Genesis 30: 7-8        Mother is Bilhah

7. And Bilhah Rachel’s conceived again, and bare Jacob a second son.
8. And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.

7.  Gad  Pronounced Gad

Genesis 30: 9-11             Mother is Zilpah

9. When Leah saw that she had left bearing she took her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.
10. And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a son.
11. And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.

8.  Asher  Pronounced Ash er        

Genesis 30: 12,13           Mother is Zilpah

12. And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a second son.
13. And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call be blessed: and she called his name Asher.

9.  Issachar  Pronounced Is sa-char

Genesis 30: 16-17           Mother is Leah

16. And Jacob came out of the filed in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have hired thee my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
17. And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth son.
18. And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.

10.  Zebulum  Pronounced Zeb u-lun

Genesis 30: 19,20           Mother is Leah

19. And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
20. And Leah said, God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun. 

11.  Joseph  Pronounced Joseph

Genesis 30: 22-24           Mother is Rachel

22. And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.
23. And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:
24. And she called his name Joseph; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son.

12.  Benjamin  Pronounced Ben ja-min

Genesis 35: 16-18           Mother is Rachel

16. And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she hah hard labour.
17. And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
18. And it came to pass, as her soul
 was in departing, (for she died) that she call his name Ben-o ni: but his father called him Benjamin.
19. And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is called Bethlehem.  Rom. 4:11
